Speaking honestly, holding true to my values while presenting a balance approach and carefully considering a broad audience was and remains so critically important. I’m humbled by this experience every time and I do my best given the circumstances. I do not consider political pretense and try very hard to reserve speaking to my own areas of expertise. I consider carefully whether I think the experience, message, and story will be helpful to those who are listening. As all of you know, we never control the questions or the output, only how we respond at the moment.

I have found myself in the media about issues I’ve face clinically. I rarely, if ever, speak to the media about individual cases without very careful consideration and only with the fully informed gently sought permission of the family and/or patient or at their request. I seek expert support and advice in these circumstances.

I find myself in awe and admiration of the patients, families, and healthcare professionals I work with every day. They are constantly front of mind when I speak and I try to convey that perspective if I’m given the privilege to share a story or a message.
